What are you going to do?

In this course you will do all the steps in the process of making art with African batik. The process goes like this:
1. You will sketch a chosen design onto cotton fabric.
2. The wax is then heated (mix of beeswax and paraffin).
3. You're going to paint the hot wax with a brush onto the cotton cloth. (Areas where the wax applied will remain white on the finished artwork)
4. Different coloured dye pigments are mixed with water, and then painted by brush onto the fabric. A simple batik may be one layer of wax and dye, or you can repeat this process to create more elaborate designs. 5. After the final dyeing, hot ironing removes the wax.
6. The colourful batiks are ready for framing, or hanging!

What will you learn?

In this course you will learn how to plan a batik project. You will get familiair with the materials, will learn how to choose a design and how to transfer and make the design. And you will even learn to think about how to display your selfmade art.

Level participants

To participate a basic experience is needed, like drawing or tracing, and painting with a paintbrush.

She enjoys working on large canvasses, using unconventional materials. Wax, shoe polish, clay and fabric dye. Batik work is a special fascinating for her because of the linear quality, and the element of surprise in that creative process.
